Best knives!
These are some of the best knives I have ever owned! The built-in sharpener really keeps the blade working at maximum efficiency. You can cut through anything with ease and it's nice knowing the blade will stay like that again and again. The steak knives are on the smaller sides but they work perfectly. The main knives come with everything you need for your kitchen and they are weighted nicely. Overall they work really well and I would definitely recommend them!

Excellent knife set. Nice and sharp. Love the self-sharpener and Calphalon name.
First of all, this knife set is from Calphalon, which is obviously a quality trusted brand. You get 8 serrated steak knives, five other larger cutting / carving / utility knives, a set of shears, and finally the knife block. All cut very nicely and have a good feel to them. I like that the wood block has built-in sharpeners for four of the five other (non-serrated) knives; it takes a bit of practice to insert the knives such that the entire blade runs through the sharpener, but time and repetition takes care of that "issue". A super handy feature is that the five other (non-steak) knives all have the name of what each is clearly printed on the end of the handle, which facilitates knowing which knife you have, and also makes it easier to ensure each goes back in its correct slot. At a bit over $200 for the set it's not for the faint of heart financially. But, a good set of knives like this that will last for years is an investment that will pay off in the long run.

Excellent quality, wish it had a carving knife
High quality build, the block it comes in is nice and heavy. My only complaint is that I wish it came with a long carving & bread knife instead of the 6" utility and serrated knife. The 6" knifes are kind of redundant and useless in the kitchen with the chef and santuko knives available.

Very functional and sharp set of knives
I'm not really a chef but having a great set of knives is always important for the kitchen for normal prep. This set of knives, really the knife block, is unique because of its built-in sharpners in the block itself. The block looks great and is highly functional. The knife set covers most of the needs in the kitchen - a very large chef knife, a smaller but light santouka knife, and other supporting functional knives. This is the first time I've seen knives labelled on the end, so you can tell which knife when it's in the block. The steak knives are lightweight but have great serration and feels very strong. My only complaint is that the handles are plastic, rather than wood, for the aesthetics. To me the knives seem pretty sharp - I was able to cut through tough skin that my previous knife had trouble with. The knives seem well balanced and the handles feel good in the hand. Even though the knife block says they are sharpeners, technically they hone the knives and the knives still need a sharpener if it gets really dull. However for everyday use, the honing in the block should keep the edge pretty sharp, so I would say it is useful to have this block with its built-in honers. The set is pretty high priced, but it's a known brand and the functional block is a highlight. You'll have to decide whether it's worth it to you.

Nice kitchen knife set; innovative, but with some downsides
The breakout feature of this set is the self-sharpening storage block, with ceramic sharpening stones set in each knife bay that (according to the instructions) keep the knives "lifetime" razor sharp with normal use as you remove and replace them in the block. Haven't used them long enough to know yet (I still have a few years to go on this earth), but regardless I'd sure appreciate if the set included a traditional sharpening steel as well for an extra edge while you're in the middle of a project so you can get cleanly through that next tomato. Note that the serrated general utility knife and the steak knives (also serrated) cannot be sharpened by the stones in the block, but need to be done the traditional way.Construction looks really good - the description says "high carbon steel" and the tangs extend all the way through the wood handles, and are held together by two rivets. The chef knife especially has a nice heft to it, and feels balanced - important for a workhorse kitchen knife that can get hours of use in a single day - but overall they feel kinda lightweight. The storage block is solid wood (oak I think) and looks great on the counter. The shears are pretty average quality (see photo) and I really wish the Santoku knife were about 2" longer (see photo). Like most quality knife sets, these are NOT dishwasher safe- the steel will rust and the wood handles will degrade.Nice for the occasional chef who'd rather not worry about keeping an edge on kitchen knives by getting in the habit of regularly stroking them across a sharpening steel before and after each use.
Very Sharp and High Quality
I am always on the lookout for high quality kitchen knives. My old set was very well made and pretty expensive, but they got dull and I wasn't able to get their edge back no matter how hard I tried. A problem with this was that I didn't take the time to keep them sharp regularly, so eventually they became too dull for my skill in sharpening to work anymore. This takes that problem away. Every time you are done using your knives they slide across a stone to sharpen them and return the edge. This is such a convenient feature for a knife block, and I love it. This set has completely spoiled me, I don't know that I'll ever be able to go back to a normal set after this. The blades themselves are very well made and thick/sharp metal. They are not going to break down or have any issues, and they have a great edge on them right out of the box. I don't have any complaints about this set. It looks excellent on the counter and the knives are all very high quality, I love it. I highly recommend this set to anyone needing a nice knife block.
